Bruce, The problem could be caused by to hard a tip. But the most likely problem is to much heat in the tip when it is being put on the saw. By this I mean that your flame could be to hot, you should use a nutral flame with a slight feather. Also, when you have put the tip on the saw, back the flame off slowly to anneal the tip correctly. This problem accurs more when new people are tipping saws. You should make sure that the tip is cool before you dress the tip or you will harden the tip when grinding, making it brittle. Using a cutting fluid when grinding, as apposed to dry grinding also prevents hardening of the tip. A good flux will also help.
